Welcome to Grammar School at Covenant Christian School
At Covenant Christian School, the Grammar School (Kindergarten–6th grade) provides a strong foundation for lifelong learning by focusing on six core academic disciplines: History, Bible, English & Literature, Mathematics, Science, and Latin. Students are introduced to the foundational knowledge, or “grammar,” of each subject, preparing them for more advanced studies in the years to come.
Our classrooms are filled with joyful learning, where children sing, recite poetry, complete hands-on projects, and create journals to deepen their understanding. Students engage in a narrative and linear study of history, bringing the past to life while building a framework for future exploration. Instruction in music and art fosters creativity and an appreciation for beauty and history. Physical education promotes healthy, active lifestyles, complementing our commitment to holistic education.
We are dedicated to cultivating a love for goodness, beauty, and truth by exposing students to the finest works of children’s literature. Writing instruction emphasizes formal grammar, sentence diagramming, and the development of strong writing skills through imitating great historical writers. Students learn to craft well-structured sentences, paragraphs, and essays, equipping them with essential tools for success.
A Journey Through Grammar School
Kindergarten
In their first year, students joyfully sing their way through Bible stories and memorize Psalm 100, understanding its meaning and purpose. Phonics instruction ensures strong reading skills, while letter formation lays the groundwork for effective writing. Combined with writing, phonics helps students become confident spellers. Math concepts are taught through hands-on manipulatives, math facts practice, and concrete lessons. In history, students explore their family heritage, local community, and key historical events. Young scientists investigate Florida’s bird life, plants, and animals, culminating in a gardening project that reflects their class’s theme: “Kindergarten.”
First Grade
First graders advance in reading fluency and writing while developing a love for literature through classic children’s books. Math instruction focuses on memorizing foundational facts for future success. In history, students explore United States history, fostering a love and appreciation for American life.
Second Grade
Second graders build on their foundational skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic while diving into the ancient world. History lessons transport students to tombs, pyramids, ziggurats, and kings, enriched by Biblical studies from Genesis to Joshua. Science focuses on the wonders of the fifth day of creation, exploring the flying creatures of the air. Classic children’s literature continues to nurture creativity and foster a love for reading and writing.
Third Grade
Students in third grade begin to develop independence and mastery in reading, writing, and math. History and Biblical studies are integrated, covering Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and the New Testament. Students explore these cultures through engaging tools like flashcards, journeying from Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations to the fall of the Roman Empire. Science shifts to the study of marine creatures, helping students better understand God’s design in aquatic habitats.
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade builds confidence and independence as students hone their writing skills and explore great literature. History lessons focus on the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation, supported by a study of the Major and Minor Prophets. Science takes students on a global adventure through Earth’s biomes, exploring land animals and diverse environments, from jungles to backyards.
Fifth Grade
In fifth grade, students delve into early modern history, exploring the discoveries of the time and their impact on geography, physics, and chemistry. Literature selections take a redemptive approach, encouraging students to see God’s providence in the world around them. Biblical studies center on the Gospels and Acts, helping students build a Christian worldview as they study history and science.
Sixth Grade
The final year of grammar school bridges the transition to dialectic studies. Sixth graders refine their reading and writing skills while learning to apply a biblical perspective to all subjects. History lessons prepare students for deeper analysis, while science and literature foster critical thinking. Biblical studies cover the Epistles and Revelation, completing the students’ study of the Bible during the grammar years. By the end of sixth grade, students are well-prepared for the challenges of the next phase of their education.
Activities and Events
Our Grammar School students enjoy a variety of fun activities and field trips that foster a joyful learning environment and complement their academic studies. Here are some highlights by grade level:
- Kindergarten: Grandparents Day, Johnny Appleseed Day, Pumpkin Patch, Farm Day, Drive-In Movie and Pajama Day, Dr. Seuss Day, Mother’s Day Tea, and Cap and Gown Graduation.
- First Grade: Pajama Day, Johnny Appleseed Day, Zoo World Field Trip, Dr. Seuss Day, and Science and Discovery Center Field Trip.
- Second Grade: Dr. Seuss Day, Egyptian Feast, and Panhandle Pioneer Settlement Field Trip.
- Third Grade: Greek Olympics, Homer Price-Donut Celebration, and Carl Gray Park Marine Science Field Trip.
- Fourth Grade: State Capitol Field Trip, Mission San Luis and the Tallahassee Museum Field Trip, Gulf Breeze Zoo Field Trip, and St. Augustine Field Trip (Florida History).
- Fifth Grade: Swiss Family Robinson Cookout and American Village Field Trip.
- Sixth Grade: Coming to Ellis Island, Shakespeare Festival, and Kennedy Space Center Field Trip.

Daily Schedule
Grammar students in 1st through 6th grade begin each day with Chapel. Chapel is a time of prayer, singing hymns, and devotions. Teachers use a story-based, chronological curriculum for Bible. This foundation prepares the student for more advanced study in biblical interpretation, doctrine, and apologetics at the upper school level. Through the teachers’ personal examples and instruction, they apply a biblical worldview in every subject, training the students to think with a Christian approach.
